While many of the ladies of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” are entering the club music arena, Season 2 contestant Jessica Wild is breaking away from the pack. With a fierce new club track & plans for more music, she sat down with Entertainment Editor Cookie to show us that she is going to be keeping it “Wild” for the foreseeable future! Jessica, thanks for taking the time to speak with me. How did your drag career get started?
I started to do drag when I was 19 years old. I was part of a dance company, and the main dancer called in sick. Later. everyone asked me to dance in drag so I could substitute for her since the event was so important for all of us. I never thought that day would be the beginning of an artistic career full of success and wonderful moments for me. I always dreamed of being a famous rock singer or celebrity dancer. I realized that by doing drag I could make all of my dreams possible.
Season 3 of “Ru Paul’s Drag Race” just ended with Raja taking the crown as “America’s Next Drag Superstar”. Did you watch this season? How do you think the ladies of this season measured up to your season?
I didn’t miss a single episode! To be honest, I can not compare any of the seasons. as each one has something special and above all, very different characters and styles of drag. I believe season 2 was ground-breaking in the sense that it left a bigger door open for season 3. For me, this season must have been really hard for the contestants, because there were more episodes than in the previous seasons. Also, it gets quite tiring surviving challenge after challenge. When you are on the show, you are inside the studio most of the time with no contact with family or friends, which adds more pressure.
Your track “You Like It Wild” is climbing the Billboard charts. Tell me about the track.
My song ”You Like It Wild” is my biggest dream come true! From the first week of being released, the track placed in the top spots on the Billboard Club Charts. It’s also being played in clubs all around the world, and for me that is something that still has me amazed. Sometimes I still can’t believe that all of my efforts are paying off, and that all this is real. The theme of the song narrates how in a nightclub, the night turns into a huge Wild party! The focus of the song is the reality of my nights presenting a show. I know You Like it Wild!
There seems to be some magic with Ranny and the ladies of “Drag Race” (he did the fierce track “Loca” with Season 1 Runner-up Nina Flowers previously). What is it like working with the Boston boy?
For a project like this, I needed a complete artist, someone who understood what I was looking for to start my career in the music club scene. Ranny is a huge star, and he was the key for the song to be a success. It is an honor to have him as part of my team. I got 100% support from him, his advice took everything to next level, from good to great as I had in mind. Ranny is the best!!
Is there going to be another single after “You Like It Wild”? Any “wish list” of artists or DJ’s you would love to work with?
“You Like It Wild” is just the beginning because I have so much more to do. I plan to work on other songs in the very near future. I’d love to work with Ricky Martin, whom I deeply admire. Our hit single would be Living La Vida Wild lol! Also, I would love to work with David Guetta someday, it would be the perfect combination for Jessica Wild. So be careful Kelly Rowland! (Laughs)
When Jessica is not turning it in the clubs, what can we find you doing?
There is so much work that needs to get done beyond the shows in order to be successful in my artistic career. If I’m not working on the shows you can find me in the office, in front of the computer attending to all of Jessica’s matters. For example, answering the questions in this interview! (Smile.) Also you can find me taking dance classes, singing or in the gym to keep fit.
