Australia overturns marriage equality Law

Five days after  same- sex marriage was legalized in Australia, the High Court has overturned the ruling, stating that the Australian Capital Territory’s law was invalid and said that same- sex marriage was a matter for lawmakers to decide at the federal level.

“This is devastating for those couples who married this week and for their families,” Australian Marriage Equality National Director Rodney Croome said in a statement. “This is just a temporary defeat. What is far more important is that the ACT’s law facilitated the first same- sex marriage on Australian soil and showed the nation the love and commitment of same- sex couples.” 

Same- sex marriage advocates have said they will continue to fight for marriage equality in Australia. Over two dozen couples were married since the law went into effect on December 7, 2013
