A New Jersey Civil Union Update

ONE YEAR LATER:

In December 2006, Governor Jon Corzine signed the civil unions legislation making New Jersey only the second state to sanction civil unions. The legislation was passed in response to the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Lewis vs. Harris ruling  in October 2006 providing a remedy for same-sex couples.

Since the establishment of civil unions, 2,229 couples have entered civil unions (1,402 female and 827 male couples).
