A captivating musical about the six wives of King Henry VIII

Imagine if the six wives of Henry VIII became their version of the Pussycat Dolls or the Spice Girls. Tudor-ly ridiculous, right? Yet that is exactly what this Tony Award-winning captivating musical, SIX, will conjure. The moment the show starts, the atmosphere at the Academy of Music seemed to shift to a concert venue.
Cue the harpsichord, as each wife presents herself in historical sequence, with how they ended their time with the king: Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived! Queue lights.
The six wives are now lit in all their powerful glory! Behind these formidable women are four other women who make up the band, The Ladies In Waiting. Yes, a live band! It really is a concert.

Each wife, clad in a perfect blend of modern pop fashion and Tudor style, tells the story of how they met the king and the things they had to endure with said king in song, respectively trying to one-up each other. Each song, like the wives, is unique and sung with true talent and power.
There is a lot of bantering between them, which will make you laugh. These songs will not only invoke toe-tapping, head bobbing, and probably an earworm or two, but they will also teach you something. You may recall one or two of these women from your school lessons, but by the time the show is over, you will know them all. One of the extra gems of this musical is it shines a light on each woman to tell her story.
This is a perfect show to see, especially during Women’s History Month! Do not let these women leave town without seeing it. SIX will be at the Academy of Music, in Philadelphia, until April 9, 2023.. Tickets are available at kimmelculturalcampus.org.
