Steve Scheuermann, “giant in the world of HIV/AIDS,” dies at 62

Stephen Scheuermann, the executive director of Buddies of New Jersey Inc., passed away on Jan. 3, 2012. Scheuermann joined the staff at Buddies of New Jersey in 1995 as a volunteer, and in 2001 became its executive director. Buddies of New Jersey is a nonprofit resource, education, and support center for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

 

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood, and the Church of the Presentation in Saddle River.

Scheuermann is survived by two sons, Christopher R. Scheuermann, and Jonathan P. Scheuermann and his wife Mary Jessica; three grandchildren, Ethan, Meagan, and Tristan; his mother, Joyce Scheuermann; three brothers, John and his wife, Donna, Robert and his wife, Lauren, and James and his wife, Sheila; and a sister, Joyce Scheuermann. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur, in 2010.

His friend and co-worker at Buddies of New Jersey, Raymond J. Walsh, describes Scheuermann as a caring person, who always had time and a kind word for everyone. “I had the pleasure of knowing, working with, and befriending a saint.” He said that locally, Scheuermann was regarded as a “giant in the world of HIV/AIDS.” He will be greatly missed by all.

Arrangements are in the care of the Aloia Funeral Home in Garfield, www.aloiafuneral.com. In lieu of flowers the family is accepting donations to Buddies of New Jersey. A funeral Mass with reception to follow in the church hall will be held on Jan. 9 at 10:45 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 1 Passaic St., Ridgewood.
