SHOW REVIEW – Stonewall Stories at LGBT Community Center

2077

There could not be a more appropriate way to celebrate Gay Pride. Stonewall Stories, written by Carol Polcovar and directed by David Gaard, features six Performers who share and interweave the varied stories of their character’s experiences during the famous Stonewall Riots – the foundation of the LGBT liberation movement.

Five of the characters were essentially generic – a runaway, a cop, a boy from the suburbs, a middle aged, lesbian, a radical young woman. The sixth was the legendary Sylvia Rivera, a drag queen widely credited with throwing the beer bottle that started it all – very well played by Nelson Felix. If Sylvia could have seen this performance, I’m quite sure she would have been proud of the fierce, brave, oh-so-cool and still funny rendition Mr. Felix gave of her character.
