40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with Grigoryeva murder

Yelena Grigoryeva was found stabbed to death in St. Petersburg, Russia on Sunday. Grigoryeva, 41, was a prominent LGBTQ rights activist in the city. A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder.

Grigoryeva worked closely with the Alliance of Heterosexual and LGBT for Equality, among other civil society groups. In recent weeks, she had been targeted on a website that targeted LGBTQ people in Russia. The site was listing personal information such as names, photographs, and addresses. The site, which calls for those listed on its page to be hunted, first appeared in 2018 but was only recently shut down by Russian authorities.

Though St. Petersburg was named as Russia’s most LGBTQ friendly city, hundreds of LGBT rights activists have been arrested and detained after attending unauthorized LGBT events. In 2013, the Russian legislature passed a law to ban so-called LGBT ‘propaganda’ that targets minors. Since the law’s passage, rights groups have reported an uptick in harassment and violence against members of the LGBTQ community.
