Today Yelp.com and the Yelp app started rolling out a new business attribute that helps users identify businesses that offer gender neutral restrooms to patrons. What constitutes a gender neutral restroom, you ask? Gender neutral restrooms are accessible to persons of any gender and are a locking, single-stall bathroom.
On desktop and mobile versions of Yelp, users will be able to see whether or not a business offers gender neutral restrooms to patrons. Yelp will be rolling out the ability to search for businesses on Yelp by the “Gender Neutral Restrooms” attribute in a few weeks. A quick online search done earlier today on the Yelp phone app shows several gender neutral restrooms within 20 miles of our New Jersey location. It is clear however that there are several dozen within less than 5 miles distance based on the density of business’ in this area.
Yelp says that within a few weeks, with user help, they will be able to identify thousands of public gender neutral business sites nationwide. Yelp will collect this information from users and business owners in two ways. They will be asking users who check into or review businesses like restaurants and retail shops if those establishments offer restrooms that are gender neutral. Additionally, business owners can edit the Gender Neutral Restrooms attribute from their business owner account.
Yesterday, Yelp announced its participation in an amicus brief supporting trans student, Gavin Grimm, who filed suit against his local school board for denying him use of the boys’ restroom at his school. Yelp has previously taken a stance on related issues (ref. Arizona, Indiana, Arkansas and North Carolina) because the company says it is important for the business community to speak up in support of equality for all.
