“The Spins (Thursday Night)” is a fun read about 20-something gay life in suburbia near the big city. The Northern New Jersey location is just perfect for a novel that centers around an outrageous Thursday Night gay birthday party – hence the title. New Jersey based author Patrick Stevens does a fine job of telling a tale with wit and style. He brings each character to life in a way that was extremely refreshing.

The angst of the characters, the obsessions, the personality traits that are so gay – meant in a mostly nice way – are spot on. Stevens blends together a young adult story with great situations and dialogue that flows easily from the pages.

The main character, Link, is a very attractive but insecure recent Rutgers graduate that is still finding his way through the tightrope of keeping his not so platonic friendships, his gay nightlife, his sex drive and everything else in some reasonable perspective. He succeeds in spite of himself mostly because he is likeable and non-committal. He has a very quirky way of rating every moment in his life on a point system. Sort of OCD-light.

Most of the book takes place on a Thursday night at one party location with a few flashbacks to expand the storyline. Jersey folks will recognize the Bergen County locations (mostly along Route 4) and two brief flashbacks to Paradise in Asbury Park and Bradley Beach.

Music lovers will test their knowledge too as many song titles and artists set the stage for the scenes throughout. The one-liners and some situations will be familiar and fun to any gay man or lesbian familiar with some out-there gay parties. If you are not gay they are self-explanatory enough to be a teaching moment. There are crazy trannies, clueless youngsters, drunken messes and sex addicts – what a party! What fun to read too!

Author Patrick Stevens lives in northern New Jersey, which he says continually, provides him the inspiration for his work (for better or for worse). He is the founder of New Jersey’s Avengers Poetry Group and a graduate of the College of New Jersey.
