Washington DC, To Allow Same Sex Couples the Right to Marry

On March 3, 2010 Washington, D.C. jjoined the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, and New Hampshire to allow same sex couples the right to marry. The new law expanded the definition of civil marriage to include gays and lesbians and now accepts applications for a marriage license. There is a full three-day waiting period between application and issues, so no marriages took place last  week, but those submitting applications will be making history.
