Vaginal gel reduces risk of HIV and herpes viruses

Rea Carey says she is thrilled

Researchers have reported a scientific breakthrough in the fight against HIV and herpes with a vaginal gel that reduces a woman’s risk of being infected with both of these viruses. The microbicide containing tenofovir, an antiretroviral drug, was 39 percent effective in reducing a woman’s risk of becoming infected with HIV during sex, and 51 percent effective in preventing genital herpes.
