Community Activism & Organizing in an Age of AltReason
Jersey Pride, Inc. is joining with Garden State Equality to produce an activism conference on LGBT community activism and organizing. It will be on Sunday, April 30, at the Asbury Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ. Organizers are Garden State Equality and Jersey Pride Inc. The two organizations are partnering with the Asbury Hotel and Out In Jersey magazine to inspire and inform the community with many workshops, resources, speakers, networking, and access to elected officials. There will be experienced community organizers that will inspire attendees with the tools for powerful, collective action at United 2017.
Why this event? Why now?
The current administration in Washington, and in Trenton, are not really serving our LGBT community say organizers. The new White House with its overt ties to hate groups and a Congress that seeks to roll back advances in equality and justice has generated a climate in which violent and discriminatory actions are condoned say many LGBT activists.
This has emboldened behavior of homophobic, misogynist, racist, and xenophobic factions across the country according to Garden State Equality and Jersey Pride organizers. “It has also reminded us that we can never rest on the freedoms some gain at the expense of those still disenfranchised.” Said the organizations. “Actions taken against LGBTQ individuals, women, immigrants, people of color, truth and reality, the environment, health care, free speech — in fact all aspects of our society — affect each of us and the people we love. The impact of these actions does not happen in a vacuum, and our responses to them cannot be isolated either.”
United 2017: Community Activism & Organizing in an Age of AltReason says that together, we can fight back. This is a one-day conference held in Asbury Park at the Asbury Hotel on Sunday, April 30, from 8:30 am to 5 pm. “It is intended to help engage, direct, and enable each of us to take our next activism step knowledgeably, responsibly and with confidence and community,” said the organizers.
