Tiaras by the ton, outfits to match

The 25th Night Of 1000 Gowns.

The Imperial Court of New York celebrated its 25th night of wildly extravagant  pomp and circumstance mixed with good old fashioned New York show biz and ornamented by every rhinestone in existence on the East Coast. The March 26 event was held at the Marriot Marquis on Times Square.

At one point I commented to a queen in fabulous satin and feathers “it’s a great night for gays.”  She answered “it’s a great night for the Swarovski Crystal Company, anyway.” And indeed, many outfits had more crystals than my dining room chandelier.

Night of A Thousand Gowns may be the most over-the-top queer event in the world but it has a very serious underlying purpose – raising money for where it is desperately needed. Over the years the event has raised fortunes for LGBT causes. This year’s event benefited the Ali Forney Center and The Trevor Project.

Among the notables lending luster to the evening (though they couldn’t outshine the outfits) were the cast of Logo’s A-List, longtime activist David Mixner, the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race, infamous porn director Chi Chi LaRue, “JMG addict” Wilson Cruz, and actress Ally Sheedy and Lt. Dan Choi were both present. Out- gay pop star Ari Gold topped all the other celebs by coming dressed as a sultan with two slave boys on leashes.

This year’s floor show was of peak Broadway quality. The several thousand guests were, however, as much a part of the show as were the entertainers. This and the smaller scale events the Imperial Court puts on during the year (also for LGBT charities) may well be the most fun you can have without breaking laws.
