book review.
Do you have a secret affection for hard-boiled private eyes who wear fedoras and exist in a world where it always seems to be raining outside the grimy window of their low-rent, walk-up offices? Then Mick Trubble, “The Trouble Shooter” is for you. Mick Trubble is a survivor in the post-apocalyptic world where survival in one of the enclosed cities is dog-eat-dog and usually depends on having a hard attitude, a gun in the pocket of your suit coat and an inside line on something other people want badly. If you’re one of his clients, maybe, just maybe, you might survive too.
The series is enriched with intensely atmospheric art by Stefan, a Parisian creator of graphic marvels who has rapidly become the dean of Dieselpunk. If you don’t know what Dieselpunk is, your “au courant” card ain’t gonna get punched! Was that a mixed metaphor? Well, Mick Trubble is a creation that you might call a hard-core “Brooklyn” type by way of Paris, so why shouldn’t the review be as well?
This new series by Bard Constantine is a fun, exciting read and a visit to his website reveals yet more innovative and entertaining work. Among the most interesting is “Silent Empire,” about which the website tells us “Francis is a man haunted by vision of a family he can’t remember and the growing awareness that his world is a fabrication by oppressors who control every aspect of his existence. After
being contacted by the mysterious Coalition, Francis is reluctantly persuaded to find the answers that elude him. His pursuit of truth puts him in a duel of wills against the Sovereign, the oppressive empire that uses the machine of propaganda combined with the brutal terror of their Dogmen to smother any spark of rebellion.
The Coalition reveals the Sovereign’s technological prowess that has trapped its inhabitants in a lethargic state that keeps its inner core protected by sleepwalking drones. Francis is the only person on the inside whose mind is active enough to resist and take action. With time running out and his life at risk, Francis must choose between defiance or submission; a decision that will either further imprison him…or shatter an Empire forever.”
The Silent Empire graphic novel is the brainchild of retro-futuristic artist Stefan, scripted by Bard Constantine. Get to the website, visit another timeline and have some imaginative fun.
