Bikini Bottom invaded the stage of the State Theatre

The denizens of Bikini Bottom invaded the stage of the State Theatre in New Brunswick, home to The Spongebob Musical, based on the long-running Nickelodeon cartoon. With a score written by such artists as David Bowie, Brian Eno, Cyndi Lauper, the Flaming Lips, Sara Bareilles, Steven Tyler, Lady Antebellum, John Legend, They Might Be Giants, and a dozen more, this show was a brightly colored, bouncy musical aimed at anyone who knows the answer to the question, “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?”

Kyle Jarrow’s book told a story of imminent disaster for the denizens of Bikini Bottom: Within two days, a nearby volcano would erupt, destroying the town. Plankton (Tristan McIntyre) and his computer bride Karen (Caitlin Ort) seek to panic the population for their own ends.

Spongebob (Lorenzo Pugliese), Patrick (Beau Bradshaw), and Sandy (Daria Pilar Redus) go against the rest of the townsfolk to try to find a way to avert disaster. Along the way, the townsfolk, including Squidward (Cody Cooley), Mr.Krabs (Zach Kononov), his daughter Pearl (Méami Maszewski), the Mayor (Helen Regula), Mrs. Puff (Natalie L. Chapman), Larry the Lobster (Dorian O’Brien), Foley Fish (Ryan Blihovde), and Spongebob’s pet Gary (voiced by Dorian O’Brien) each deal with impending doom in their own ways. Patrick Hoagland led a small orchestra that gave the right amount of bounce to the many lively numbers yet hit the perfect poignancy for the few serious numbers in the score.

The Spongebob Musical played November 29th through December 1st at the State Theatre in New Brunswick.
