The sixth annual Southern New Jersey LGBTQA Pride will welcome its first headliner Monica Beverly Hills from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” to the new pride festival location in Pennsauken this year. The Rock the Rainbow Pride Picnic will take place from noon-6 pm on Sunday, Sept. 15.

“This is the first year we have had a celebrity headliner,” said  Southern New Jersey LGBTQA Pride founder DeAnn Cox, “she is coming all the way from Chicago.” Monica Beverly Hills is stopping by Tabu, in Philadelphia on Saturday night and then she will perform on Sunday at the pride picnic. Cox is excited to have a headliner this year.

Cox said there will be close to two dozen vendors at the picnic and they will be selling all kinds of goods, from jewelry to leather as well as lots of information..

This year the event location was changed to the Pennsauken portion of Cooper River Park, at the baseball field near the Christopher Columbus statue, from its previous Collingswood location due to some issues with the previous location in Collingswood. This is the first year the festival is listed as an official gay pride event by the Park. Cox is ready for a different feel to this year’s Southern New Jersey LGBTQ Pride festival, which gives South Jersey residents a chance to celebrate in their own space.

Southern New Jersey LGBTQA Pride has scheduled a weeklong series of events before the picnic, starting with a volunteer orientation from 5:30-6:30 pm today, Sept. 10 at the Voorhees Library, 203 Laurel Road. Then, on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 6-9 pm the Burnz Cigar Vault and Lounge at 239 N. White Horse Pike in Lawnside, they will host an LGBTQA Professional Networking Affair. On Thursday, Sept. 12  from 7-11 pm therey will host Bowling at Pinsetters Bar & Bowl, 7111 Maple Ave. in Merchantville.

This year’s programming and picnic includes a message and theme centered on anti-bullying. The theme is supported by Comcast, which will host a workshop on anti-bullying education and awareness at 2 pm on Saturday, Sept. 14 at The Treehouse Coffee Shop, 120 W. Merchant St. in Audubon.

Cox is stressing openeness this year and is asking people to wear their gay pride gear on Sunday to represent themselves and the community against bullying.
