SisterSpace is ready to celebrate 35 years of empowering women through music, art and education. Organizers of SisterSpace weekend held in September have planned several pre events, starting with a dance party at Pro Bar in Resorts Casino on Saturday July 28. Pro Bar is Atlantic City’s favorite hotspot and gay bar for LGBT and their allies. All proceeds go towards SisterSpace of the Delaware Valley.

There will be another final fundraiser on August 11th at the Seafood Shack, located at 42 ½ Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach Delaware. The newly reunited band “The Girlfriends” will entertain guests. There is no cover for this event, which starts at 8pm.

When the goddesses who founded the SisterSpace Weekend in the 1970s (then a women’s self-defense weekend known as the Lesbian Feminist Weekend) first dreamed up this event, they knew it would still be going strong nearly 40 years later. Their vision of celebrating and preserving women’s space, forging women’s community and enabling women’s empowerment lives on. It is a one-of-a kind event year after year.

So, what is it?

It depends on who you ask. It is a showcase for women’s music and a forum for discovering new artists and a vehicle for exchanging ideas with and learning from other fascinating and like-minded women. Organizers say it is also a place to relax and socialize with an exciting and diverse group of new people. Kind of like a “family reunion” where women return yearly to enjoy time with their friends from across the country.

It is also a space for women to cut loose, push their own limitations to the edge and discover themselves in an outlet without the patriarchy. They become completely immersed in women’s space.

But let’s say too that it is a kick-ass three-day all-girl party in the woods. SisterSpace is one of the longest running festivals for women in the country. The SisterSpace Weekend is September 7th – 9th in Darlington, Maryland.
