Drag Con can be overwhelming
Right off the bat, you could tell that RuPaul’s Drag Con NYC was bound to be the event of the season. It was held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. The center was decked out with signs stating such signature Drag Race terms as “Sashay This Way” letting you know that you were about to enter into a world of complete magic, love, and best of all, acceptance for all.
The entire event can be beyond overwhelming. Do you want to see the iconic RuPaul have an exclusive one on one interview? Do you want to get your picture snapped with Alyssa Edwards, Peppermint, Miss Fame, or Miz Cracker? Do you want to watch some of the amazing live performances that occurred all weekend? Maybe you need to simply walk around and discover all the gorgeousness that World of Wonder has created for this magical weekend.
In short, you can do it all, and more. Not only are your favorite Drag Race contestants and winners featured, but you can even snap shots with people like the divine Coco Peru, the legendary Lypsinka, and nightlife denizen Amanda LePore. Jiggly Caliente may be over their ready for pictures, but make sure you stop at the Huntees stand to grab your favorite t shirt. You may want to pop over and visit Alexis Michelle’s Norma Desmond-esqu world, and get a picture snapped, but you also may want to talk to the boys over there about the Dmart gear hat, and t shirt they are wearing screaming this past season’s signature phrase,“VANJIE”! It’s truly what you could call “fierce and fabulous overload”.
The overwhelming feeling felt through the entire event is love. From the child dressed as Divine, to the amazing Desmond is Amazing, to our favorite Jersey girl and Drag Race judge Michelle Visage, everyone was ready for hugs, pictures, and the ability to share a few kind words.
For one weekend, I experienced what we will have very soon in the world outside of RuPaul’s Drag Con; a world where finally, “Everybody Say Love” will be the mantra we all are following again.
