Book Review of B as in Beauty by Alberto Ferreras
Much like the title character of “B as in Beauty,” Alberto Ferreras’s debut novel is larger than life. The novel follows the lovely B through her journey to self-actualization through rather unconventional means. Though her journey to learn to love herself is fantastic, it is surprisingly believable. Not all fat girls have a Russian fairy god mother, but stranger things have happened.
I read this entire novel from my daily perch on the stationary bike at the gym. As a woman of color who has spent her whole life battling with weight, I dreaded the thought of reading about another fat girl while feeling the burn. I was wrong about B. On several occasions I had to stop peddling because I was laughing too hard to climb the imaginary hills.
