Newark Pride announced the 21st Annual Newark Pride Festival week will be from July 13–19. The 2026 theme is “Our Bodies. Our Stories. Our Power!”
The theme is a declaration of autonomy, truth and collective liberation, organizers said in a news release. “It boldly affirms that LGBTQ+ people — especially Black, Brown, femme, trans, and gender-expansive communities — are the rightful authors of their own lives. Our bodies are ours to protect, celebrate, and define. Our stories are ours to tell, preserve, and pass on. Our power is ours to claim — fully, unapologetically, and without compromise,” the release said.
“At a time when LGBTQ+ communities continue to face political attacks, cultural erasure, and threats to bodily autonomy, Newark Pride remains committed to creating space for visibility, healing, joy, and resistance,” Newark Pride President Alonzo S. Blalock said in the release. “This year’s theme reminds us that our existence is powerful, our stories matter, and our communities deserve to thrive.”
Newark Pride organizers remind the community that the week of events is because of Sakia Gunn, a 15-year-old Black lesbian from Newark who was murdered in 2003. Gunn defended herself against harassment. Her life and legacy remain central to Newark Pride’s mission and purpose.
“Our Bodies. Our Stories. Our Power!” honors Gunn by “affirming that our bodies are not public property, our voices cannot be silenced, and our lives hold undeniable value. Through remembrance and action, Newark Pride transforms grief into responsibility — ensuring that Sakia’s legacy continues to inspire advocacy, protection, and change for future generations.”
Protecting LGBTQ+ history and community wellness
With renewed political attacks and censorship nationwide, Newark Pride said, it is committed to preserving and uplifting the stories that shaped the queer movement — from the Stonewall Uprising to Newark’s own legacy of resistance and organizing. This year’s festival calls on the community to reclaim and protect the community narratives by recognizing that storytelling is both survival and strategy. “When we control our stories,” the organization said, “we protect our legacy.”
The 2026 festival theme also emphasizes holistic wellness and empowerment. In partnership with leaders including Gilead Sciences and ViiV Healthcare, Newark Pride will spotlight advancements in HIV and STD prevention, including PrEP, U=U (Undetectable Equals Untransmittable) and emerging innovations in sexual health care.
There are events planned for conversations around consent, survivor-centered healing, mental health, self-care and financial wellness — affirming that true liberation includes safety, dignity, emotional well-being and economic stability.
“Power is holistic,” festival organizers said. “Rest is power. Therapy is power. Boundaries are power. Financial freedom is power. Caring for ourselves and each other is revolutionary.”
The week of events in Newark will lead to the annual Newark Pride Festival on July 19 at Mulberry Commons Park.

Cookiee Kawaii is the 2026 headliner
Newark Pride will welcome viral music sensation Cookiee Kawaii as the headliner for the festival. Kawaii is known for her high-energy performances, Jersey Club anthems and global hit “Vibe (If I Back It Up).” Kawaii has become one of New Jersey’s most influential contemporary artists, bringing Newark and Jersey Club culture to audiences worldwide.
Festival organizers also hinted at a special tribute honoring the late DJ Melodious, whose impact on Black queer nightlife, ballroom culture and the regional club music scene remains deeply felt throughout New Jersey and beyond.
The festival hosts will be acclaimed actor Rodney Chester, best known for his groundbreaking role as Alex Kirby on the iconic LGBTQ+ television series Noah’s Arc, alongside ballroom legend Tyra Old Navy, one of New Jersey’s most celebrated and influential figures in ballroom culture. Together, the hosts represent the intersection of legacy, visibility, artistry and Black queer excellence that continues to define Newark Pride, organizers said.
