Submissions are open for the second annual Newark LGBTQ Film Festival happening April 26-28, 2024. This Queer film festival is the first of its kind in the city of Newark and the state of New Jersey to focus on LGBTQIA+ BIPOC films, film makers, directors, and actors. The Festival is specifically looking for those from Newark and the surrounding areas to submit their work.
The mission of the festival is to amplify the voices, visions, and works of film that would otherwise struggle to find a mainstream audience but have a significant impact in raising awareness around lives and issues of queer people and queer communities of color. This event brings people together while celebrating the rich history and bright future of artistic contributions from the LGBTQIA+ BIPOC community in Newark and beyond.
The festival programs a wide range of films including short films, documentaries, experimental films, and student projects. There are also a handful of feature length films that are screened across the weekend.
Filmmakers can submit films through the Film Freeway website until the regular deadline of January 26, 2024. If you miss the deadline for an additional entry fee films can be submitted until the late deadline of February 16. Filmmakers will be notified before March 1 about their inclusion in the festival for 2024.
In addition to the films which screen at a variety of venues across the city there are other exciting events including Opening and Closing night parties, Q&A with filmmakers, and filmmaking workshops. This year there will be the premiere of two short films inspired by the life and legacy of Sakia Gunn which are being funded through a grant from the festival in partnership with Express Newark’s Community Media Center.
All filmmakers who have a film selected to screen at the festival are given a VIP pass for all of the weekend events. Tickets and passes for the general public will go on sale starting in February.
