Bob Zuckerman has been following the political scene in New Jersey for some time. In fact, he says, “I used to work for a New Jersey state senator so I’m quite familiar with the political landscape here.” As a former leader of the New York City chapter of the Stonewall Democrats, he knows the impact that political activism can have.
“As many of you know, I’ve been looking into the possibility of starting a chapter of the Stonewall Democratic Club in Hudson County,” said Zuckerman in an email this week. “As a former president of the Stonewall Democrats in New York City, I know firsthand the real impact that an active LGBT Democratic organization can have for our community, in our community.”
Although born and raised in New Jersey, Zuckerman spent the past 14 years living in New York City. He still works in Manhattan.
“My partner, Grant, and I moved our primary residence to Jersey City last August,” he says, “With legislative redistricting around the corner, and big municipal elections coming up in the next couple of years, as well as huge U.S. Senate and presidential races next year, I believe the time is right for such a grass-roots political club for LGBT Democrats in Jersey City, Hoboken, and throughout the county [of Hudson.]”
The first meeting of the new Hudson County Stonewall Democrats will be held on March 31 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be at Zeppelin Hall, Rathskeller Room (at Liberty Harbor), in Jersey City. Zuckerman says the meeting should last 90 minutes or so, and everyone is encouraged to stick around afterward for drinks and food. .
“We have a number of special guests invited, so I’m sure it will be a fun, exciting evening.” he says. He is encouraging participation from lesbian women and the transgendered community, as his personal list of invitees is currently weighted toward gay men, he says.
