Carmen Carrera“In The Cookie Jar” Interview -“RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 3 contestant

Carmen, thanks for taking the time to talk to me. It’s so great to see a Jersey girl is doing us proud on Season 3 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”! Where in N.J. did you get your start?

Originally I’m from Elmwood Park. N.J actually.
I started doing the usual drag circuit in Jersey, with Princess Janae’s Drag Attack at the Colosseum, then onto New York City at Escuelita, Star Search at the Barracuda, pretty much any amateur contest I could enter. I did this until I truly wasn’t an amateur any longer!

The drag community in N.J. can be pretty fierce. Who are you absolutely loving in the Jersey scene right now?

Of course I have my favorite queens-Angel Sheridan, Melina, and of course Ashley Blake, she has done so much for me! In New York, I love Jasmine International, and of course my drag mother, Angela Carerra. For me, drag is all about the transformation aspect. Anyone who takes that transformation very seriously & can totally change themselves I love!

Season 3 Drag Race CastWhat made you want to initially try out for Ru Paul’s Drag Race?
It was a combination of things really. Everywhere I went, people would tell me that I should try out, they continued to encourage me to take the first step. I actually worked with Jujubee from Season 2, so that definitely helped me make me decision.

Once I was cast, I realized what an opportunity this was. I didn’t want to exploit my character, as I realized that I can influence people in so many different ways. I can open people’s minds to different ways of thinking and different ideas of what “drag” really is. I take the chance to be a role model very seriously.

Now that you’ll have national exposure, what are your plans? Nina Flowers (Season 1) and now Jessica Wild (Season 2) have both done music. Any chance you’ll try that avenue?

I know that I could definitely come out with a hot club banger! LOL. My main priority is being active in anything that involves giving back to the community. The audience sees us on the show, but I want to go deeper; I plan to be a role model. I have a lot to say; I want to be a voice for the community, maybe even go into politics.

When Carmen Carrera is not turning it out for the crowds, what can we find you doing?

Well, I am a make-up artist by trade, right now I am doing a lot of freelancing. I usually am hanging with my family, cooking my husband of 2 years,. and just relaxing.

Carmen, your New Jersey fans anxiously await your debut on Season 3 of “Drag Race”. We will all be cheering you on!
Thank you so much, it’s going to be a blast!
