Chris ChristieA Superior Court Judge has ruled that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s school budget cuts violate the states constitution mandate to provide efficient and through public education. Judge Peter Doyne wrote, “The difficulty in addressing New Jersey’s fiscal crisis and its constitutionally mandated obligation to educate our children requires an exquisite balance not easily attained, it is clear the State has failed to carry its burden.”

Judge Doyne went on to write “Thirty-six percent of our districts were funded at a level below adequacy for FY 2011; seventy-two percent of our at-risk students reside in those districts.”

The case will return to the Supreme Court for consideration. The court will then have to decide if this budget cut is due in large part because of the recession.

Gov. Christies budget cuts left schools with $1.6 billion less than the school funding formula calls for during a fiscal year. When asked about the ruling on “Ask the Governor” on radio station 101.5 FM Christies response was, “It’s crazy, just crazy.”
