New York City is one of the most culturally diverse places in the entire world. It has one of the most thriving arts communities where so many people focused on building a career in theater, writing, and music flock to. It is no surprise that the city also has one of the largest LGBTQ communities too.

The creative arts are filled with so many queer people. This new documentary highlights four of them and their journey with working in such creative fields and the highs and lows of being in artistic industries.

This film shows the weight of the queer artistic community. Each of the individuals gives a great insight into how New York City residents are so interconnected and how, when one artist succeeds, it helps the whole industry to allow others to work their dream job. It shows the fullness of living in the city and how there are so many opportunities for all different types of artists to thrive.

Of all the individuals interviewed, the most intriguing is Alec. Being a transgender man from Baltimore, he discussed how coming to New York City and being in the queer community really gave him more of a sense of belonging. When he was living in Baltimore, he was the only transgender person in the musical theater community. But now in the Big Apple, he is able to see more people like him.

Alec also struggles with ADHD and lets the audience know the healing power of art. Music specifically has been a lifeline for him when dealing with some of his struggles.

Being In New York has great themes too, about following your passion or “passions” and finding what the best job for you is. NYC helps a queer person to discover it may not be exactly the one you had in mind. It really highlights too how the Big Apple is really a place for endless opportunities. It is a place where transgender and other queer individuals can really thrive.

Overall, Being In New York is a solid documentary. If you are looking for one that reminds you how important it is to live out your dreams and that celebrates the power of art, look no further than this one.
