Michelle Visage“In The Cookie Jar” Interview – “RuPaul’s Drag Race” judge Michelle Visage.

Michelle, thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me! You’re a “Jersey Girl” correct?

Sure am Cookie! Jersey is where it all started for me. I was born in Perth Amboy, and moved to South Plainfield. Jersey was where I started going to all the clubs, I remember all of em’-Hunka Bunka Ballroom, Club Abyss (formerly Club 35), Mingles, City Lights. You could actually plan out your whole week, we had a place to go every night of the week!

You were a member of Seduction back in the 90’s. Any itch to ever go back to performing?

Michelle VisageTo be honest, not at all. Cookie, I was on the road my entire early 20’s, I actually turned 21 while traveling on the road! The music business was so different back then, the companies really got behind the artist and made them back then. It’s a totally different game now.

Right now, I Iove to entertain in other ways. My new job as a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race” is amazing, and radio keeps me busy also.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” has a huge following with the Jersey boys. Ever get a chance to come down and show the Jersey boys some love?
To be honest, there was not much of a gay scene when I was living in Jersey. I did do The Coloseum sometimes, and I went to Asbury Park once when Ru was performing; I’m so thrilled that Asbury Park is coming back!

My scene was the New York City clubs; I don’t think I missed one! I did Escuelita, Barracuda, all of them. I actually met Ru in New York, I was running a vogueing troupe in the city before it hit the big time with Madonna, and met Ru. The rest is history.

Right now you’re working for 93.9 in Florida! How does a Jersey girl do it down in Florida?

Hello culture shock! It is very different down here, but I am really close to South Beach, and really close to Ft.Lauderdale, which means all my gay boys are close! Also since 9/11, there are a ton of New York/New Jersey people that have transplanted down here, which is great.

I do miss living up north, but I moved down here for work, which in turn is giving my kids stability; being a mom is my first priority. I am always up for coming back up though, so you never know.

For Season 3 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” you are the new permanent judge. What do you think you will be bringing to the judges table?

Cookie, we’ve been trying to make this work since day 1! Ru is one of my best friends and I’m so excited to be doing this! We essentially have grown up together. As for judging, I can say some of the things that Ru would not normally say, since she is, as we know, “America’s Sweetheart”. I mean, essentially, I am a drag queen, so I definitely let these queens know the real deal. Ironically, we have another “Jersey Girl” on the cast, Carmen Carerra! This season is definitely must-see; trust me, we do NOT dissapoint!  Right from Episode 1 we start with a big bang, you definitely have to stay tuned!
