The New Jersey leather community crowns 2019 winners
Education and expanding knowledge of the leather community are two of the main things Mr. New Jersey Leather 2019, Lynx Onyx, wants to promote during his title year.
“As I was going through life living and loving my leather ‘self’, I became aware through meeting and talking with many different people of different walks of life that there was a need for representation of a different kind,” Lynx said of his decision to run for the men’s title. “With the surplus of leather lifestyle elements in media and entertainment, leather is seemingly becoming more mainstream and not so ‘dark corner’. I think people are accepting more easily that they have non-traditional sexual interests and are looking for people to help them learn the way, so to speak. I saw this as an opportunity to share my story of how anyone can live a freely leather life. I felt that this was an opportunity to be visible within the community and bridge the gap of those who are already here to those who wish to gain access. I firmly believe that it (the title) is an opportunity for me to serve at both ends.”
During Lynx’s formal speech at the end of the contest, he touched on something called ‘leather magic’, something Lynx uses to live his best leather life and hopes to share with others.
“I believe we are all born with magic in us,” Lynx said. “Some people have sports magic, others have political magic and people like you and me have #LeatherMagic. Sometimes, it was in my case anyway, sometimes it takes exposure and information to ignite the magic that’s lying dormant in us. But once it happens — it’s powerful. We are given an opportunity to live our full lives without regret or fear of ‘them’ or ‘they.’ I want to use this year to spread that message to anyone curious or may have forgotten how powerful Leather Magic can be when used for the benefit of good. If that means showing up at events to represent our state, I’m here. If it means teaching workshops on skills that can increase the magic between partners who play, I’m here. If it means having a coffee with a novice that just wants someone to trust as they figure this out, I’m here. If I can positively affect one person to live their best leather life by using their own #LeatherMagic, my year will have been successful.”
