Legislature passes an upgraded Hate Crimes and Bullying Law

On January 7, by a 65-10 vote, the New Jersey Assembly approved bill A4591/S2975, sweeping legislation to strengthen New Jersey’s hate crimes and anti-school bullying laws. The Senate approved the bill 35-0 on January 3.

The bill, conceived by Garden State Equality (GSE) with the New Jersey Anti-Defamation League, the Gender Rights Association of N.J. and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, adds “gender identity or expression” to the state’s existing hate crimes law and strengthens the hate crimes law in several other ways.
