June – July 2008 Editorial

We wish we could write a cheerful editorial all about how wonderful our June Pride month is. Unfortunately, we cannot. The shadow of last August’s horrible murders of three young students in Newark hangs heavily over us. New charges filed in by the Essex County prosecutor against the alleged murderers make public what we had been told privately by friends of the victims from the beginning–that the crime involved sexual assault. It has also been reported that at least two of the victims were slashed before being shot.

Shortly after the crime was discovered, Newark Mayor Corey Booker hastened to announce it was merely a robbery gone bad. Newark police echoed this obvious attempt to cover up the most hideous aspects of the incident–aspects that had to have been clear to investigators from the first moment.
