The atmosphere was festive— considering. If the rainbow flag didn’t register with passersby, the sounds of Cher singing ‘Strong Enough’ let them know this gathering at City Hall was a gay affair.

The joint effort between Hudson Diversity Action Council, Jersey City Lesbian & Gay Outreach, Hudson Pride Connections, the Pride Connections Center of New Jersey and Garden State Equality, was necessary because the area has a seen a rise in violence against LGBTI people. Some of these recent events haven’t been adequately reported— one involved an employee at a fast food chicken place who frequently taunted members of an LGBTI organization, ultimately escalating to violence.
