Jersey City Councilman James Solomon won in the Dec. 2 mayoral runoff election. He defeated former Governor Jim McGreevey. The runoff was triggered after neither candidate secured 50% in the initial seven-person race, where Solomon led with 29% to McGreevey’s 25%.
Solomon will succeed three-term Mayor Steven Fulop in January. The race was a test of McGreevey’s political comeback. McGreevey, who resigned as New Jersey governor in 2004 saying “I am a gay American” after admitting to an extramarital affair with a male aide, had not appeared on a New Jersey ballot in over 20 years.
