HIV/AIDS Update: AIDS at 26

805

This December, AIDS turns 26 and in some ways it’s quite a different epidemic than it was in 1981, when it first started. The stigma and prejudice may still be there in one form or another, but the communities affected mostly by the virus have changed along the way to include women, the elderly, youth and minorities. African Americans and Hispanics were hit the hardest by HIV/AIDS. Nowadays we bring up the subject of HIV/AIDS not only on December 1st, World AIDS Day, but also on National HIV Testing Day and on October 15th (this year in its fifth anniversary), which marks the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day.
