Since the pandemic, Good Homes for Dogs, located in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, has nearly quadrupled its number in adoptions with approximately 100 applications per dog according to the rescue’s communication coordinator, Thomas White.
“Some things are the same,” said White. “We’ve had to change the way we do things.”
Working for the rescue for two years, White shares that the rescue is struggling due to COVID-19. Although adoptions are up, Good Homes for Dogs relies heavily on their donors. “Adoption fees only cover a portion of the medical costs,” said White.
The Berkley Heights rescue had to cancel their two largest fundraisers for the year, Woofstock, which delivers a lot of live music, and their Bow Wow brunch.
Good Homes for Dogs has been around for the last 10 years and started out of the living room of eight volunteers from Summit, New Jersey. The rescue saves dogs from Georgia and South Carolina. The locations are specified by locating high populations of unwanted dogs, euthanasia, and need for rescue. After all dogs are cleared medically and socialized, they are groomed and transported to stay with a foster family before adoption.
In this time of pandemic and financial struggle, Homes for Good Dogs continues to work for the sake of the animals. White reminds those looking to adopt to ask themselves if they are ready for a 15 year commitment. “Make sure you are getting a dog for the right reasons,” said White. The communications coordinator says this because he has seen dogs returned when the adopter no longer has the time to care for the pet.
