Gay Life Is Awful In Zimbabwe

1914

INTERNATIONAL GAY PRIDE

Zimbabwe is a very repressive African country ruled by a tyrant, Robert Mugabe. Mugabe reclaimed the presidency earlier this year after the people tried to vote him out. He raided the offices of the opposition party, and his opponent, who led in the polls, eventually fled the country out of fear for his life. The economy in Zimbabwe is shambles as inflation is astronomically high and its currency is virtually worthless. The country is basically shunned by the rest of the world and there are still efforts to get Mugabe to resign and allow a free and democratic government. It is hard enough being a straight person in Zimbabwe and not be harassed. Being gay can land you jail.

Yet, there is a thriving gay community in Zimbabwe as evidenced by the more than decade old group Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ).
