Cookbook review.
As a serious cook and a collector of well over 100 cookbooks, I have to say From Recollection To Recipe is a special delight. More than just a cookbook, this is a well illustrated memoir of growing up in a New Jersey, Italian family and the role played by all the wonderful food. Anyone who grew up in such a family or knew families like that (and who in Jersey doesn’t?) will find this book to be a warm and cheerful trip down memory lane.
Even more than the memories of family life however, this book is exceptionally useful as a cookbook. Robert Vendetti has given as a step by step guide to making all sorts of Italian specialties ranging from stuffed artichokes through biscotti all the way to Zucchini Giambotto. Every recipe is illustrated with step-by-step photos and very clear instructions, making this pretty much a can’t-fail cookbook for anyone who can boil water.
Did you have an Italian mother or a friend whose family was Italian? If so, you must remember the endless, wonderful food. Do you have a childhood memory of Ricotta Rum Cheesecake , Chicken Cacciatore or Steak Pizzaiola? This is the book that will tell you exactly how mom made it in a way that will enable you to get the same, mouth-watering results. If you only have room for two cookbooks and one of them is, of course, Joy of Cooking, make this the other one. If you’re serious about food. get two copies because you’ll certainly wear one out.
