Undoing the Sins of Past Government-Sanctioned Prosecution of the LGBTQ Community in Asbury Park

June 29, 2021 – 7:00PM to 8:00PM

Please join New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and Garden State Equality for an unprecedented event to begin a process of truth and reconciliation addressing past persecution of the LGBTQ+ community.

From the 1930s to the 1960s, the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control – a division within the Attorney General’s Office – used its enforcement authority to shut down more than 100 establishments that served LGBTQ+ patrons. Now, more than 50 years later, Attorney General Grewal will acknowledge this shameful period in our state’s history and join our state’s LGBTQ+ leaders in memorializing the pain caused by this injustice.

AG Grewal will assist Garden State Equality and leaders in Asbury Park in placing a permanent marker to acknowledge this history – and to highlight efforts by GSE and others to protect the LGBTQ+ community from state-sanctioned discrimination. This event is brought to you with the assistance and collaboration of the leadership of the City of Asbury Park and its Asbury Park Tree Shade Commission.
