EDITORIAL – In this election every vote counts

1547

There has been a lot of attention paid in this presidential campaign to the candidate’s positions on issues of immediate concern to the queer community. The media, especially our own community’s media, has been exquisite in weighing and balancing every hint regarding such matters as same-sex marriage, hate crimes legislation, trans inclusion in anti-discrimination laws and more.

Surprisingly little attention, however, has been paid to what may be for us,  the most important long-term consequence of this election – the fact that the next president may have the opportunity to appoint at least two, and possibly as many as three,  Supreme Court justices. Just one more arch-conservative could quite literally ruin everything for our LGBT community. Everything we have achieved might be quickly undone by a very conservative Supreme Court.
