Discovering the Orthodykes

New group meets at the Pride Center of NJ

“My own coming-out process was very difficult and I initially felt like the only person on the planet with my demographic and I wanted to ease the process for others who are like me,” asserted Elissa Kaplan, facilitator for Orthodykes-New Jersey, a group that meets at the Pride Center of New Jersey in Highland Park. The group is designed as a support group.

When Kaplan tells people that she is Orthodox Jewish and queer, the most common response she gets is, “Why don’t I leave Orthodoxy for a different Jewish denomination that’s more accepting.”
