June is our month to celebrate Pride – our accomplishments on the long road to equality. Here in New Jersey we have much to be proud of. We have civil unions, job and housing protection, perhaps the strongest anti-bullying law in the country, one of the strongest and most active state-wide political action organizations, (Garden State Equality) a terrific state gay pride festival in Asbury Park and numerous more local gay pride festivals, LGBT friendly adoption policies and more.

amendment one - Out In Jersey editorial cartoon June 2011Each of these past accomplishments and victories represent an uphill battle won by dedicated activists with limited resources. However, we are not yet at the end of the road. We do not have full marriage equality and we are unlikely to get it as long as we have a governor who hates gays and does not believe our relationships count. It is impossible to over-emphasize the importance of the elections coming up this Fall. Re-districting has jeopardized some gay-friendly legislators. If the Republicans manage to gain a majority in the legislature we will be in deep, deep trouble.

There can be little doubt that Christie will use his considerable power to try to roll back our present gains. Of course there will be no hope of further progress.

Can you envision waking up one morning in 8 or 10 months to a headline reading “Christie Proposes To Re-Examine Civil Union”? It could happen. The arrogant bully who now occupies the governor’s office would certainly like it to. Now is the time to get involved – work for the election of legislators who will support our community. Volunteer and contribute – but start now.

The next battle has already begun. Where are you?
