The LGBT RAIN Foundation will support a brand-new shelter for LGBT homeless youth in Essex County later this year. The shelter will be only the second in New Jersey for LGBT youth in crisis.The first fundraising appreciation dinner will be on Saturday, April 26, at Chateau of Spain in Newark at 6pm.

Fred Phelps, founder and long-time leader of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church (not connected to any genuine Baptist denomination) died on March 19 at the age of 84. His final months were spent in a hospice where he was in and out of lucidity according to son Nate Phelps, estranged from much of his family and excommunicated from Westboro Baptist as a result of an internal power struggle.
Gay and lesbian couples holding a valid marriage certificate from a state that recognizes same- sex marriage will be able to file a joint federal tax return for tax year 2013. But 22 states do not recognize same- sex marriage but require taxpayers to reference their federal return when filing state income tax. Revenue officials in these states must therefore provide guidance for taxpayers.

Lesbian and gay seniors face discrimination while searching for housing in adult communities and senior assisted living facilities in New Jersey according to a new study. "Opening Doors: An Investigation of Barriers to Senior Housing for Same-Sex Couples," found that in 40% of tested cases LGBT persons say they were treated less favorably than their heterosexual peers in senior living accommodations.
