Backlash continues over DOMA brief from Feds

U.S. Department of Justice strikes a blow to LGBT community

The Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a brief in response to a lawsuit, Smelt v. United States, where a married California same-sex married couple is seeking to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

DOMA prevents federal recognition of same sex unions. The DOJ brief insists it is reasonable for states to favor heterosexual marriages because they are the “traditional and universally recognized form of marriage.”
