With Cooper’s permission, fellow gay journalist Sullivan shared with the world what many people already speculated. As published in The Daily Beast, Cooper wrote to Sullivan, “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”

Cooper has previously avoided questions regarding his sexuality in favor of keeping the discussion of his personal life to a minimum. He conveyed to Sullivan, “By remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something — something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid.” Cooper did not want the public to misinterpret his silence regarding his sexuality as shame. Instead, Cooper wanted his silence to be understood as a separation of the personal and professional and his coming out as a positive testimonial for young people.

Since Monday, Cooper has received overwhelming support from numerous celebrities including close friend Kathy Griffin, Ellen DeGeneres and Kelly Ripa. According to the NY Daily News, media strategists in the field are saying that Cooper’s coming out should not negatively impact his career.
