The Point Foundation announced 2018 college scholarship winners. And New Jersey resident Alice Liou is among them. Liou is working on Social Studies/Education; Ph.D; at Teachers College, Columbia University.
There are 19 other LGBT students that were chosen to be Point Scholars across the country. They were chosen from more than 2,000 applicants. Point is also welcoming 25 LGBT students to its Community College Scholarship Program this year.
What is the Point Foundation?
Point is the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBT students. This year’s scholarship recipients include seasoned advocates for LGBT rights. Some have been active for social justice. Others may become impressive scientists or industrious medical students and will may impact professions from law to business and the arts. In addition to their accomplishments, many of the scholarship recipients have overcome barriers to their success that are all too common among LGBT individuals.
“Point’s diverse class of scholarship recipients give us hope and make us proud,” said Jorge Valencia, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Point Foundation. “These young leaders are determined to make our nation and our world a much better place than it is today. Point is incredibly grateful to the people and companies that support our work and make these opportunities possible for our scholars.”
For 2018–2019, there will be 98 LGBT students receiving financial assistance and programmatic support from Point. They will pursue their associate, bachelor’s, or advanced degrees. After graduating, students become part of Point’s growing alumni network, connecting them with individuals and professional contacts throughout the nation. In late July, Point will bring its current scholars and many of its alumni together for its National Leadership Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Notable facts about the 2018 Point Scholar class:
• 70% identify as people of color or bi/multiracial.
• 60% identify as other than male.
• 55% identify as bisexual, polysexual, or queer.
• 45% identify as transgender or gender nonconforming.
• 35% are first-generation college students.

• 64% identify as other than male.
• 64% identify as bisexual, polysexual, or queer.
