Construction for senior housing of LGBT and their allies could start as early as 2012. The new senior housing will be connected to the William Way Community Centers existing structure in Philadelphia. The seventy low-income apartments will house LGBT seniors and their allies. The center itself will expand another 3,000 feet, and will include an expanded ballroom, library and catering kitchen, and a courtyard. Programs will be expanded with the hopes that the center will bridge the generational divide.
There is a strong need for low-income housing for LGBT adults. A study conducted at UCLA in March of 2009 found that poverty is greater for gay men and lesbians over the age of 65. It has also been noted in several studies that there is a greater need for housing LGBT persons due to widespread discrimination. A survey conducted by the William Way Center in 2008 found that 23% of households had an annual income below $20,000 a year, and 25% below $40,000 a year.
