Recently I was invited to review Jersey City’s new hotspot, 87 Sussex. Located in the heart of Jersey City in the quaint neighborhood of Paulus Hook, 87 Sussex provides a gourmet experience from start to finish. The dishes are carefully curated with authentic, high-quality ingredients, with special attention paid to detail and presentation. There are a variety of signature cocktails in conjunction with wines sourced from prestigious vineyards in France, Italy, New Zealand, and California.

The interior design is straight out of Manhattan. From the moment you walk in, you feel as though you are transported into Soho given the chic, cosmopolitan decor and layout. The design also emphasizes the natural light and in turn, enables a warm environment.

87 Sussex perfectly merges the elegance of fine dining with a relaxed atmosphere personified by impeccable customer service. Our waiter, Hazem, was excellent at educating us on the restaurant and menu and recommending dishes and cocktails based on our palate preferences.

The restaurant is two floors, and upon entrance a separate bar greets you to the right. I started off with the agave francais martini, which is now my new favorite cocktail. I am a martini snob. I am always ordering different martinis when I go out and this one was made just right with Maestro Dobel Diamante tequila, St. George raspberry liqueur, pineapple, and fresh lime. This martini is smooth and goes down easy. During dinner I opted for the mezcal salted pineapple which, if you like tequila, you are sure to love this. It was rather strong albeit it got the job done. During dessert I ordered an espresso martini which was flawlessly made with espresso, Bailey’s Irish cream, Kahlua, and three espresso beans.

Executive Chef Brian Walter creates an unforgettable experience checking all the boxes with his always-evolving seasonal menus and locally sourced ingredients. This is the perfect establishment to pop in, order a plethora of appetizers and cocktails, and vibe out with friends for hours. The appetizers truly take center stage here. We opted for the truffled turnips, ox & egg ravioli, and escargot wontons. I would order all three again. Each dish is rich with distinctive flavor and you can taste the quality in every bite. The unique pairings of ingredients is what makes the food so special here. For an entree, we each ordered a prime New York strip steak. The steak was solid, and I am a picky eater to begin with. Nevertheless, the appetizers remain the breakout star, because while you can find a great steak elsewhere, you really can’t find any of these special appetizers anywhere else. For dessert, we opted to split the passion fruit trifle, paired with perfectly mixed espresso martinis. The dessert was rich in flavor and infuses lemon poppy cake with passion fruit curd and winter berries. This is definitely a dish I would order again. If you like chocolate, another popular dessert is the chocolate turtle cake, which infuses dark chocolate mousse, devil’s food cake, salted caramel, and toasted walnuts together.

Overall I had a 10/10 experience and hope to return. This is a great date night spot or perfect for a night out with friends. 87Sussex.com
