The National Council for Home Safety and Security ranked the safest cities in New Jersey for 2018. The top ten are:

  • 1. River Vale Township
  • 2. New Milford
  • 3. Washington Township, Morris County
  • 4. Clinton Township
  • 5. Bernards Township
  • 6. Warren Township
  • 7. Hillsdale
  • 8. Monroe Township, Middlesex County
  • 9. Bergenfield
  • 10. Woolwich Township

To identify the safest cities and towns, NCHSS reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics along with their own population data and internal research. They followed up by eliminating any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and removed cities or rural towns with populations under 10,000.

The cities and towns were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people. The variables were then weighted, with violent crimes assigned a value 1.5 times (due to their severity) that of property crimes.

The report was formally released on Feb. 5, 2018, by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. It is a trade association comprised of home security professionals across the United States. The council advocates for safe communities and home safety with a strong focus on community involvement.
