"Dirty Dancing" is at the Kimmel Center

As this entertainment writer entered the lobby of the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater, you could feel the energy and the buzz among the theater goes who were milling around waiting for this tale of newfound love, complete with some angst and joy. The Kellerman’s  Resort in the Catskill Mountains was the perfect backdrop for this classic and energetic story to unfold.

A magnificent mixing of original recordings and a lively ensemble of live musicians perched far above the stage was perfect. The tale unfolds to reveal to the audience the most interesting and colorful lead characters. Rachel Boone as 17-year-old “Baby” Houseman, Christopher Tierney portraying the male lead as Johnny Castle, the sexy dance instructor. Both true to the original characters in the iconic film. A comedic standout Alyssa Brizzi as Lisa Houseman: The “Hula Honey.”

The story penned by Eleanor Bergstein is based on her summers in the Catskill Mountains. The audience is transported to the beautiful mountain settings all the way to the beautifully exciting ballroom of the resort. The choreography true to the time period rendered by Michele Lynch, and executed with expertise and passion by the entire cast.

The final moments of this terrific production has the audience dancing in the aisles. The cast was paid homage with a resounding ovation! Needless to say the audience had “The Time of Their Lives.”
