More than 200 high school students from Newark Public Schools were in attendance with entertainer Harmonica Sunbeam, as Hetrick-Martin Institute-NJ welcomed the students for the LGBTQ Youth Summit in May.

The May 19 event was coordinated by HMI-NJ in partnership with Newark Public Schools and the LGBTQ & Intercultural Resource Center at Rutgers University. The day included dancing and laughter as well as 10 workshops, some of which focused on trauma and the event’s theme, “No More Drama: Love Is Not Abuse.”

The day closed out with keynote speaker Jane Clementi, founder of the Tyler Clementi Foundation. Special guest SuSu Stewart, chair of the City of Newark’s LGBTQ Commission, joined as a host to inform participants of citywide initiatives benefiting LGBT youth.

HMI-NJ organizers and staff thanked all of the workshop facilitators and volunteers. They also thanked corporate partner, Prudential, who assisted with the Youth Summit throughout the day. Other event sponsors included The Asbury Hotel, BASF, Horizon, Dr. Gerald Iacullo, Bari Mattes, Jeff Spelman and Ivan Lo, Dennis and Isabella Speigel, Doug Stroup and Steve Porter, PNC, Verizon, Dan Zanella and Steven Horn, Andrew Lark, EDGE Media and Out in Jersey magazine.

Upcoming HMI-NJ events include the Solstice event in Asbury Park on June 17 from 2 to 4 pm at The Asbury Hotel in Asbury Park. Tickets are still available online.
