Assembly committee to discuss marriage equality bill on Thursday in NJ

The next step in the ongoing effort to make marriage equailty a reality for LGBT couples in New Jersey is on Thursday. The Assembly Judiciary Committee will hear testimony and then a vote in favor is expected by late afternoon. Garden State Equality (GSE) is planning to attend the hearing and to be there for the vote. The hearings are expected to start at 10 am at the New Jersey State House, 125 West State Street in Trenton. 

Garden State Equality and other LGBT groups invite the LGBT community and straight allies to join them at the State House in Trenton. They urge all to arrive as early as you can to get seats in the main hearing room – all the previous hearings on marriage equality went into overflow rooms. Seating in the main hearing room is first-come, first-served. On Thursday, GSE will be there at the crack of dawn to meet you in front of the State House.

This Thursday’s Assembly Judiciary Committee hearing is the final hearing on the bill and the second step in bill’s prospective passage. Previosly the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, was capped by an 8 to 4 vote in favor of the marriage equality bill. After Thursday’s Assembly Judiciary Committee hearing, in the weeks ahead, the bill will go to the full Senate and the full Assembly for final floor votes at the State House.
